The Number System From 11-19
By ArabicTree | August 26, 2007
In the number system, there are a few segments of rules; if you’ve reviewed numbers from 1-2, and numbers from 3-9, the next step is numbers from 11-19.
One and two are slightly different (because they are na’at); in any case, in the number system from 11-19:
- The ‘adad is singular and mansoob, and opposite in gender to the ma’duwd
- The tens digit is singular and mansoob, and the same gender as the ma’duwd
- The ma’duwd is singular and mansoob
Ten in Arabic is ashara: عَشَرَ (masculine) or ashrata: عَشرَةَ (feminine). Let’s go over some examples:
17 cows: سِبعَ عَشرَةَ بَقَرَةً. Note that:
- The ones digit–seven (sab’a) is masculine, while the ma’duwd (baqarah) is feminine
- The ones digit is singular and mansoob
- Ashrata is singular and mansoob and feminine (like the ma’duwd)
- Baqarah is singular and mansoob
Contrast this to 7 cows: سَبعُ بَقَرَاتٍ. Here, the digit is majruwr, and the ma’duwd is majruwr (mudaf ilayh).
16 camels: سِتَّةَ عَشَرَ جَمَلً. Note that:
- The ones digit–six (sittah) is feminine, while the ma’duwd (jamal) is masculine
- The ones digit is singular and mansoob
- Ashara is singular and mansoob and masculine (like the ma’duwd)
- Jamal is singular and mansoob
